Michael Wolff Named Editorial Director of Adweek Media

first_imgTrouble or not, e5 has at the very least secured impressive media buzz from the Min and Wolff appointments, not to mention Beckman himself, who left a president and chief executive post at Condé Nast’s Fairchild Fashion Group in January to head up e5.e5 Global Media, backed by Pluribus Capital Management and Guggenheim Partners, bought the Adweek Media Group titles, along with The Hollywood Reporter and four other brands from Nielsen Business Media in late 2009. Michael Wolff, Newser founder and Vanity Fair columnist, has been named editorial director of Adweek Media, a group of trade magazines including Adweek, Mediaweek and Brandweek owned by e5 Global Media. Wolff is the second high-profile appointment since e5 CEO Richard Beckman hired Janice Min as editorial director of The Hollywood Reporter. Wolff [pictured] is known for his aggressive take on the media business and it appears that this sensibility was key to his appointment and one he will continue to exploit. Beckman told the New York Times that Wolff is “…controversial. Which is good. If you want to make an omelet you have to break some eggs.”Likewise, Wolff said of his hire that he plans on having a lot of fun covering the media business and that he wants to “make some trouble.”last_img read more

Tumblr porn ban goes into effect puppy photos caught in sweep

first_imgTumblr’s ban on adult content went into effect Monday, and it didn’t take long for users to bare their naked thoughts on the move. The blogging platform announced the change Dec. 3 in a post titled “A better, more positive Tumblr.” On Monday, a new post apologized for what the site admitted has “not been an easy transition.” Flagged content will be hidden, not deleted, the site reported.”Written content such as erotica, nudity related to political or newsworthy speech, and nudity found in art, specifically sculptures and illustrations, is also stuff that can be freely posted on Tumblr,” the post says. “Although, photorealistic imagery or photography – images, videos, or GIFs — with real humans that include exposed genitals or female-presenting (yeah, we know you hate this term) nipples or depict sex acts is not allowed per our guidelines.”Breastfeeding and nudity in art are still OK to post.  Users quickly found flaws in Tumblr’s implementation of the ban. Some found tricks to get around the flagging process, others saw legitimate content hidden.Asked for comment, Tumblr referred CNET back to the Dec. 3 and Dec. 17 posts, as well as the site’s posted updates to its community guidelines. AI accuses Myanmar of imposing apartheid on Rohingyas

first_imgRohingya refugees walk towards a refugee camp after crossing the border in Anjuman Para near Cox`s Bazar. ReutersMyanmar’s suffocating control of its Rohingya population amounts to “apartheid”, Amnesty International said Tuesday in a probe into the root causes of a crisis that has sent 620,000 refugees fleeing to Bangladesh.Distressing scenes of dispossessed Rohingya in Bangladeshi camps have provoked outrage around the world, as people who have escaped Rakhine state since August recount tales of murder, rape and arson at the hands of Myanmar troops.Myanmar and Bangladesh have agreed in principle to repatriate some Rohingya but disagree over the details, with Myanmar’s army chief saying last week that it was “not possible” to accept the number of refugees proposed by Dhaka. The Amnesty report, published Tuesday, details how years of persecution have curated the current crisis.A “state-sponsored” campaign has restricted virtually all aspects of Rohingyas’ lives, the Amnesty study says, confining them to what amounts to a “ghetto-like” existence in the mainly Buddhist country. The 100-page report, based on two years of research, says the web of controls meet the legal standard of the “crime against humanity of apartheid”.“Rakhine State is a crime scene. This was the case long before the vicious campaign of military violence of the last three months,” said Anna Neistat, Amnesty’s Senior Director for Research.Myanmar’s authorities “are keeping Rohingya women, men and children segregated and cowed in a dehumanising system of apartheid,” she added. The bedrock for the widespread hatred towards the Muslim group comes from a contentious 1982 Citizenship law.Enacted by the then junta, the law effectively rendered hundreds of thousands of Rohingya stateless.Since then, Amnesty says a “deliberate campaign” has been waged to erase Rohingya rights to live in Myanmar, where they are denigrated as “Bengalis” or illegal migrants from Bangladesh.A system of identification cards is central to those bureaucratic controls, and likely to form the basis of the decision on who will be allowed to return from Bangladesh. The latest wave of persecution has pushed more than half of the 1.1-million strong minority out of the country, with those left behind sequestered in increasingly isolated and vulnerable villages.Although the Rohingya have been victims of discrimination for decades, the report details how repression intensified after the outbreak of violence between Buddhist and Muslim communities in 2012.Long before the recent mass exodus of Rohingya from northern Rakhine state-now a virtual ghostland of torched villages and unharvested paddy fields-they were unable to travel freely, requiring special permits and facing arrest, abuse and harassment at numerous checkpoints. In central Rakhine state, Rohingya Muslims were driven out of urban areas after the 2012 violence. They remain completely segregated from the Buddhist community, confined by barbed wire and police checkpoints to camps that Amnesty calls an “open-air prison”.The Muslim community is widely denied access to medical care, their children are unable to attend government schools while many mosques have been sealed off.“Restoring the rights and legal status of Rohingya, and amending the country’s discriminatory citizenship laws is urgently needed,” said Anna Neistat.“Rohingya who have fled persecution in Myanmar cannot be asked to return to a system of apartheid.”last_img

Statue of test tube baby pioneer to be unveiled at his birthplace

first_imgKolkata: After Bengal, it is now time for Jharkhand to pay tribute to Dr Subhash Mukherjee, the creator of India’s first test tube baby, who had almost gone into oblivion.Though Dr Mukherjee was born in Jharkhand’s Hazaribagh district, Bengal had been his workplace for a very long time. After coming to power, the Mamata Banerjee government has paid due respect posthumously to Dr Mukherjee by naming prestigious chairs after him at the two state-run medical colleges in Kolkata. He created the country’s first test tube baby — Kanupriya Agarwal, alias Durga, in October 1978 inside his house in Kolkata with the help of some general apparatus and a refrigerator. He committed suicide in 1981 after the Left Front government had allegedly neglected his research and was harassed by the then strong gynaecologists’ lobby. He could not handle constant criticism and the outright harassment he was subjected to. The Left Front government had argued that Dr Mukherjee lacked sufficient documentation. In 2002, the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) recognised his work for the first time. After chipping in for nearly a decade, Prof Mukherjee finally succeeded in convincing the district administration about the contribution of Dr Mukherjee in the field of medical science. Ravi Sankar Shukla who is the current DC of the district readily accepted the proposal and took necessary steps to erect the statue outside the Sadar Hospital as a mark of respect. “We are extremely happy to see that our efforts have been translated into action. The district administration has finally given its consent to set up his statue in an area which is close to the place where he was born. A book has also been published containing articles on Dr Mukherjee. We are also thankful to Partha Mazumdar, NTPC chief general manager in Hazaribagh,” Prof Mukherjee maintained. Ravi Sankar Shukla said: “After being posted here, I felt the responsibility and got in touch with the Bengali Association. The statue that has been erected here could be a befitting tribute to Dr Mukherjee. We supervised the project which was assisted by the NTPC.”last_img read more

A classical performance by music maestros

first_imgIt’s that time of the year again when legendary musical maestros are slated to perform at one of India’s oldest music festivals – Shriram Shankarlal Music Festival 2017 – that is almost as old as Independent India. The Shriram Shankarlal Music Festival has been curated by Padmashree Shobha Deepak Singh, festival director and vice-chairperson of Shriram Bharatiya Kala Kendra (SBKK) and will be held in the SBKK lawns from March 30 to April 2, from 7 pm to 10:30 pm. Also Read – Add new books to your shelfThe four day festival will kickstart with a vocal performance by the doyenne of Hindustani music Girjia Devi followed by vocals by Ajoy Chakraborty. Other participating artists are Manjiri Asanare (vocal), Pandit Shiv Kumar Sharma (instrumental on santoor), Biswajit Roy Chowdhury (instrumental on sarod), Rashid Khan (vocal); Purbayan Chatterjee (instrumental on sitar) and the grand finale on April 2 will be by none other than Pandit Jasraj.”This is the 70th edition of the festival and, after many years, we are hosting it in open air in the lawns of SBKK. In its nascent years, it was only the senior artists who were part of the festival, but now, we make special effort to include younger talent as well. Contrary to popular belief that classical music is losing its audience base, the success of the festival year after year proves that there is not only a discerning audience for classical music but also that classical music retains its unique position on Indian arts,” says Shobha Deepak Singh.
