World Cup 2019: What happened when India last met England in a World Cup

first_imgIndia will meet hosts England in a high-profile clash of World Cup 2019 at Edgbaston on Sunday. While Virat Kohli’s men are still unbeaten in the tournament, they will still be looking to beat their opponents and secure qualification for the last-4 stage. On the other hand, England’s 2 back-to-back losses against Sri Lanka and Australia have thrown their semi-finals chances into jeopardy. The last time these 2 teams met at the World Cup was 8 years ago in Bengaluru during the 2011 edition. The high-scoring tied match ended up as an all-time World Cup classic as even after 676 runs being scored and 18 wickets having fallen, there was no way to separate the two teams. After winning the toss and opting to bat first on a flat Chinnaswamy deck, India looked well set for a huge score after Sachin Tendulkar hit a brilliant 120 while being well supported by crucial fifties from Gautam Gambhir and Yuvraj Singh. However, a flurry of wickets at the end of their batting innings meant India could score only 33 runs off the last 4 overs while losing 6 wickets. They were bowled out for 338 – a total which looked insurmountable in those days. However, England captain Andrew Strauss had other ideas.Strauss scored 158 – the highest score by an English batsman in World Cup history – and his assault was so powerful that it wasn’t untill he was dismissed in the 43rd over, that India had started to believe again. Even after his dismissal, England needed 58 runs off 43 balls with 6 wickets in hand. But Zaheer Khan’s reverse-swing along with some miserly bowling from the rest of the Indian attack managed to pull things back for India. Just not enough for a win.advertisementWith 2 runs needed off the last ball, Graeme Swann managed to hare back for a single off Munaf Patel, thus bringing the match to an end it truly deserved. Also Read | MS Dhoni cannot be told what to do, we believe in him: Virat KohliAlso Read | World Cup 2019: Match vs India not the toughest I will face, says Eoin Morganlast_img
