India drop Leander Paes from Davis Cup squad for World Group tie vs Serbia

first_imgIndia have dropped Leander Paes from the Davis Cup squad for the World Group tie against Serbia next month. India will travel to Serbia for the World Group tie from September 14 to 16.In April, Paes became the most successful doubles player in the history of Davis Cup when he clinched his 43rd win.Paes paired up with Rohan Bopanna and defeated the Chinese pair of Mo Xin Gong and Ze Zhang 5-7 7-6(5) 7-6(3) in do-or-die doubles rubber of the Asia/Oceania Group I tie.Paes was also named in the tennis squad for the ongoing Asian Games in Jakarta but he pulled out on the last minute. Paes had said he was not happy getting a “specialist” men’s doubles partner for the Asian Games.However, in his absence Bopanna and Divij Sharan teamed up to win gold for India in the men’s doubles competition.Leander Paes most successful doubles player in Davis Cup historyBopanna and Sharan will be playing the doubles at the Davis Cup while three singles players will be Yuki Bhambri, Ramkumar Ramanathan and Prajnesh Gunneswaran.Rohan Bopanna is currently ranked 37th in the ATP doubles list while Divij is a notch below at 38.The members of the selection committee, SP Misra (Chairman), Balram Singh,Nandan Bal, Rohit Rajpal and coach Zeeshan Ali selected the team via teleconference.Mahesh Bhupathi and Zeeshan Ali are the non-playing captain and coach respectively.The team will be accompanied by two physios as well for this tie.Squad: Yuki Bhambri, Ramkumar Ramanathan, Prajnesh Gunneswaran, Rohan Bopanna, Divij Sharan, Saketh Myneni.advertisement(With inputs from PTI)last_img
