Argonauts Set for GSC Tournament

first_img May 2, 2007PENSACOLA, Fla. – On Apr. 11, West Florida was 3-7 in conference play and in next-to-last place in the Gulf South Conference East Division. Since then, West Florida is 11-3 in their last 14 games and the Argonauts have claimed the second seed from GSC East Division. West Florida will look to continue their late season momentum at this weekend’s GSC Tournament at the Greenbrook Softball Complex in Southaven, Miss.Second seed West Florida (34-23) will face GSC West third seed Henderson State (26-13) in the first round at 11:45 a.m. CST. This is the first meeting this season between the two teams. The regular season game on Apr. 15 at the GSC Crossover was rained out.West Florida is 32-14 all-time at the GSC Tournament with three championships in 1998, 2004 and 2005. West Florida’s 32 GSC Tournament wins are tied for fourth-most in conference history. West Florida has won at least two games at every GSC Tournament since 2002.Nicky VanCamp (Davenport, Iowa/Kirkwood CC) leads the West Florida offense with a .310 batting average. VanCamp is batting .500 (8-16) in her last six games with four extra-base hits and two RBI. Valerie Staub (East Brunswick, N.J./Wallace-Dothan CC), the reigning GSC East Division Player of the Week, has totaled seven of her 23 RBI over the last six games.Taren Walton (Pensacola, Fla./Pine Forest HS) leads the Argonauts with a 17-8 record in the center circle. Walton, the reigning GSC East Division Pitcher of the Week, has won her last six starts and has only allowed one earned run in her last 35 innings as a starter. Emily Burge (Pace, Fla./Pace HS) is 15-13 on the season with a conference-high 35 appearances and 230 strikeouts.Henderson State enters the tournament on a six-game winning streak. The Diamond Reddies are second in the conference with a .327 batting average and third with 54 home runs. Three Diamond Reddies are in the top ten in the conference in batting average: Jeaniel Pati (.430 – 2nd), Kelcie Glidden (.409 – 5th) and Tori Gast (.403 – 6th). In the center circle, Henderson State has posted a team earned run average of 3.04, the fifth-lowest in the conference.West Florida leads the all-time series, 5-1, but Henderson State won the last meeting, 4-3, in eight inning in the quarterfinals of the 2006 GSC Tournament.
