Teacher won’t face charges

first_imgThe teacher was immediately placed on paid administrative leave pending the results of the sheriff’s investigation. But Thursday night, sheriff’s detectives began calling parents of the students involved to say the District Attorney’s Office had declined to pursue charges because of insufficient evidence – specifically, that the students’ testimonies were inconsistent, parent Larry Puentes said. “To put it plainly, we’re \ off,” said Puentes, whose daughter Jazleen was injured in the incident. “We do not like this outcome. We’re upset she hasn’t been charged and we don’t want to have her back at the school.” Now that the sheriff’s investigation is complete, Genis has agreed to organize a town hall-style meeting between authorities and the parents, who have been asking for such a meeting since the incident took place. When asked whether the teacher will return to Meller Elementary or face any disciplinary action from the school district, Genis said he was “not at liberty to say much” because of confidentiality laws regarding personnel issues. PICO RIVERA – A teacher accused of attacking several fifth-graders during a physical education class at Meller Elementary School last month will not face criminal charges in connection with the incident, authorities said Friday. For the past two weeks, investigators from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Special Victims Bureau had been probing the Feb. 15 incident at Meller between an unnamed teacher and about a dozen fifth-grade students. The incident began during a morning PE class as fifth-graders were running laps and the teacher was outside with her first-grade class. The fifth-graders said as they got closer to the teacher’s class, she began hitting and kicking several of them, resulting in bruises and scratches. But the teacher claimed she was only trying to protect the younger students from the oncoming group of fifth-graders, El Rancho Unified School District Superintendent Norbert Genis said. “But in general, when an instructor or employee is cleared of wrongdoing by the Sheriff’s Department, they do return to work,” he said. Alyson Hannigan having good run in “How I Met Your Mother”

first_imgAfter spending all those years playing the witch Willow on “Buffy the Vampire Slayer,” Alyson Hannigan is having a good time playing kooky newlywed Lily on the CBS sitcom “How I Met Your Mother.” “Each episode is just getting better and better,” she says of the show, which is now in its third season. “Marshall (Jason Segal) and Lily are exploring being married. It’s a lot of fun. We get our own place – well, we look into getting our own place – I won’t tell you if it works out or not.” Too late! Hannigan, also known for her role as Michelle – the girl with the band camp stories – in the “American Pie” movies, says the cast has become a tight-knit ensemble. 160Want local news?Sign up for the Localist and stay informed Something went wrong.
