The 11 commandments of the Internet in China

first_img News June 2, 2021 Find out more ChinaAsia – Pacific China’s Cyber Censorship Figures ChinaAsia – Pacific Organisation to go further A study published by OpenNet on 5 July contains an interesting analysis of a law introduced last September to regulate online activity which Reporters Without Borders at the time dubbed the “11 Commandments of the Internet.” OpenNet explains how the law makes it impossible to set up an independent news website. The law distinguishes between three kinds of informational websites. The first encompasses authorised sites with a government licence which just republish news and information already disseminated by the official media. They must be registered with the authorities and obey the “11 commandments” and must not make any changes to the articles they reproduce. The second category consists of sites that carry not only reports from official sources but also reports and information that is only posted on the Internet and which they gather in an independent fashion. These sites must only cover subjects for which they have been officially accredited and must employ at least five full-time editors with at least three years’ experience with an official news agency. These restrictions above all concern Chinese web portals such as Sina.com and Sohu.com.The third category comprises all other sites. They are not only subject to the restrictions imposed on the first two categories but are also banned from publishing articles based on information which they themselves have gathered. They must employ at least 10 editors of whom five must have at least three years’ experience with an official news agency, and they must be registered by an entity with at least 10 million yuan (about 1 million euros) in capital. The full text in chinese—————-“You shall not spread rumours”, “You shall not damage state security”, “You shall not destroy the country’s reputation”. There are just three of the 11 commandments ordered by Beijing, on 25 September, aimed at bloggers and websites managers.Reporters Without Borders expressed concern at this latest turn of the screw in an ongoing crackdown on freedom of expression.”The Chinese authorities never seem to let up on their desire to regulate the Web and their determination to control information available on it ever more tightly,” the worldwide press freedom organisation said.“These new rules, announced with a fanfare by the official media, are certainly more intended to frighten Internet-users than to codify the use of the Net,” it said. “In fact there is nothing really new in these 11 commandments, which simply repeat that the party has the monopoly of the dissemination of information and that the media’s task is not to be objective but to relay state propaganda.“These moves to filter the Internet are nevertheless a sign that the Internet frightens those in power, in particular during a period of ever greater social unrest. It’s noticeable that the only new elements in the text relate to banning the calling of strikes or gatherings though the Net,” it said. The new rules, ordered by the state council information bureau and ministry of industry and information, are aimed at bringing into line all previous such edicts. According to the Chinese daily Beijing news (thebeijingnews.com), it contains 11 subjects forbidden to online editors. They are banned from putting out news that:- violates the basic principles of the Chinese constitution:- endangers national security, leaks national secrets, seeks to overthrow the government, endangers the unification of the country;- destroys the country’s reputation and benefits;- arouses national feelings of hatred, racism, and endangers racial unification;- violates national policies on religion, promotes the propaganda of sects and superstition; (Reporters Without Borders note: More than 30 members of the spiritual Falungong movement are currently behind bars for posting news on the Internet)- diffuses rumours, endangers public order and creates social uncertainty;- diffuses information that is pornographic, violent, terrorist or linked to gambling;- libels or harms people’s reputation, violates people’s legal rights;- includes illegal information bounded by law and administrative rules. Two completely new bans have been added to the nine rules above:- It is forbidden to encourage illegal gatherings, strikes, etc to create public disorder;- It is forbidden to organise activities under illegal social associations or organisations.Websites that break these new rules will be shut down and those running them will have to pay a fine that could reach 30,000 yuans (3,000 euros).Reporters Without Borders points out that 62 people are currently imprisoned in China for having posted articles on the Internet that the authorities deemed to be “subversive”. Draymond Green mocks Rudy Gobert for crying about All-Star snub; Gobert fires back

first_imgBig men who made it in over Gobert include Anthony Davis, Nikola Jokic, LaMarcus Aldridge and Karl-Anthony Towns.UPDATE: Gobert was asked Friday about the criticism. As part of his response, he tweaked Green for an old social media blunder:Rudy Gobert: “Draymond, did he tweet? What did he tweet? As long as he doesn’t post anything on Snapchat, we’re good.” 😂😂😂 pic.twitter.com/I6Q8En4LxF— Chris Kirschner (@ChrisKirschner) February 2, 2019Green sent out a snap of his private parts on Snapchat in 2016. Rudy Gobert seemed like a lock for the NBA All-Star Game, but instead he was a glaring snub — and it really affected the reigning Defensive Player of the Year. An ESPN report from the night before said “the Jazz fully expected Rudy Gobert to receive his first All-Star selection,” so it’s easy to see why Gobert got emotional. He was ready to be honored and rewarded for his hard work, but instead he felt slighted.Even if he makes it in as a replacement, Gobert said he’d accept, but “it still wouldn’t be the same.” (Gobert loses a $1 million bonus for not being selected as an All-Star reserve and can’t earn the bonus as an injury replacement, so that won’t make him feel any better.)Jazz general manager Dennis Lindsey was also upset by the snub.”Flabbergasted, disappointed, disgusted, I guess would be some adjectives to describe our collective mood,” Lindsey said. “We’re not very happy with the coaches’ vote. Ownership, [team president] Steve Starks, [head coach] Quin Snyder, myself — there’s no way to put into words our disappointment.”After the video of Gobert getting emotional gained traction on social media, other NBA stars took notice — especially Warriors players Draymond Green and Andre Iguodala, who mocked Gobert for crying.I guess I should cry too… no Charlotte? 😢😢😢— Draymond Green (@Money23Green) February 1, 2019He gone cry in the car?— Danielson… (@andre) February 1, 2019Iguodala’s tweet is a reference to the movie “Friday.”Nuggets guard Isaiah Thomas later joined in, questioning Gobert’s emotions.Come on fam you are too big to be crying like that…— Isaiah Thomas (@isaiahthomas) February 1, 2019Gobert was a first-round pick in 2013, and he has really come on strong in recent years. He’s made NBA All-Defensive First Team in 2017 and 2018, but still has no All-Star selections to his name.As Sporting News’ Sean Deveney wrote, “Gobert came back this year a vastly improved player. He has become a much smarter and more patient post player, averaging 2.2 assists, nearly doubling his previous career average (1.2). He is scoring a career-high 15.0 points and leading the league with 65.0 percent shooting. He’s tweaked the way he defends, too, getting more comfortable stepping out to the perimeter to guard 3-point shooting big men.”center_img Rudy grew increasingly emotional speaking with the media about his All-Star snub. Georgia-Based Jamaicans Laid to Rest

first_imgWASHINGTON — Hundreds of Jamaicans and friends turned out at a church in  Decatour, Georgia, on January 5, to celebrate the lives of Ainsworth and Jacqueline Mallett and son Drew, the Georgia-based Jamaican family, who perished in a traffic accident on December 27. Formerly of Stone Mountain, Georgia, the Malletts owned and operated the Golden Krust Caribbean Bakery and Grill franchise, a popular gathering place for the Caribbean-American community in and around Lithonia. Jamaica’s Ambassador to the United States, His Excellency Stephen Vasciannie,  sent a message expressing  sorrow at their passing. “Words alone are clearly never adequate in situations like this,” he said, while telling the surviving 18 year-old daughter, Nicole, and family and mourners that, “even in the midst of your grieving, may their memory and exemplary service continue to inspire you all to live with meaning and purpose.” “It is our fervent hope that especially in the immediate days and months ahead you will draw comfort from the warmth of family, friendship, and community at this most trying time, encouraged by the wonderful memory of the departed ones whose lives you are now celebrating,” the Ambassador added. Ambassador Vasciannie’s message was read by Jamaica’s Honorary Consul in  Georgia, Mr. Vin Martin. Among other dignitaries in attendance were US Congressman Hank Johnson (D-GA), President and CEO of Golden Krust, Noel Hawthorne and DeKalb County Commissioner, Larry Johnson. In her eulogy, Nicole told the congregation that her family “were fun people and I will miss them for the rest of my life. But I can’t sit and dwell on the fact that they are gone. Instead, it is best that we remember them for the fun people they were.” The accident occurred while Mr. Mallett  and his family were driving back to Georgia after visiting his ailing mother in a Connecticut Hospital over the Christmas holidays.last_img read more

Muslim group asks for Jan 29 day of remembrance for 2017 mosque

first_imgOTTAWA – One of Canada’s most prominent Muslim groups is asking Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to designate the anniversary of the 2017 Quebec City mosque shooting as an official day of remembrance. The National Council of Canadian Muslims wants Trudeau to endorse Jan. 29 as a national day of remembrance and action on Islamophobia. In a letter to the prime minister released today, executive director Ihsaan Gardee says such a designation would help enhance public education about hate, bigotry and Islamophobia.Last January, six Muslim men were shot and killed and 19 others were wounded in an attack on the mosque during prayers. Alexandre Bissonnette of Quebec City is to stand trial in March on six charges each of first-degree murder and attempted murder.Gardee says Canadian Muslim communities are still feeling the aftershocks of the attack. He says the call for a day of remembrance is supported by dozens of other Canadian Muslim groups and community partners.Elected leaders like Trudeau need to work to ensure that such a tragedy is not repeated, Gardee writes.“We must not allow voices of hate, even ones that initially appear to be on the margins, to permeate our public discourse and damage our social fabric.”last_img read more

Spalletti talks after 30 win

first_imgInternazionale Milan beat Lazio 3-0 this Monday night in the Italian Lega Serie A and the team is now in the second position in the standingsInternazionale Milan had a great match against Lazio tonight, getting a 3-0 win that pushed them to the second position in the Italian Lega Serie A standings. And for Inter’s coach Luciano Spalletti, they had a good performance.“The performance is the fundamental thing. We have the possibility to control games the way we did in the first half, whereas in the second we gave the ball away too much, allowed Lazio to cause us problems and in those situations, I see a lot of what we shouldn’t do,” Spalletti told Football Italia.Stefano Sensi, inter milanReport: Inter go top with win over Udinese George Patchias – September 14, 2019 Inter Milan are top of Serie A after beating Udinese to make it three wins out of three.Antonio Conte’s career at Inter Milan, could…“This is why I say we’re not the anti-Juve because if we wander into those errors, we are anti-nobody. We had one decent half, that’s it. Let’s not get ahead of ourselves.”“Anyone who wants to leave things the way they are had better get out of the way. The President has spoken clearly,” he added.“These are the ambitions of Inter, to have this attitude and control the game at the Stadio Olimpico against a very impressive Lazio.”“The results might not always be like this, but the approach has to be for Inter,” he commented.last_img read more

Gracia geared up for tough Bournemouth test

first_imgAhead of their trip to Bournemouth on Wednesday, Watford boss Javi Gracia says his side needs no extra motivation to beat Eddie Howe’s side at the Vitality Stadium.Gracia saw his side lose 4-0 at home to Bournemouth in their first meeting in the Premier League in October. As they prepare to travel to Bournemouth on Wednesday, Gracia wants his side focused on the tactical and technical aspects of the game, and not on revenging their 4-0 defeat.“I don’t think my players need the motivation to do our best,” he told the club’s official website.“I know my players and I know in all the games without exception they give their best. They don’t need extra motivation to play against Bournemouth.”In the October clash between the two teams, Watford had a player sent off after Bournemouth took the lead.Joshua King then scored a brace after Christian Kabasele was shown red and the first half ended 3-0.Callum Wilson completed the scoring two minutes into the second half to make it a humiliating 4-0 home defeat for Javi Gracia’s side. What to expect from Watford V Arsenal? Taimoor Khan – September 8, 2019 Arsenal are set to take on Watford this weekend and the game is definitely going to be quite a peculiar contest between two sides…“It was a very, very tough game for us,” Gracia said, recalling the events of the game.“After the sending off, it was difficult to play with ten players and losing 2-0. It was tough for us. I saw the game many times, not only the period against ten men.“I saw when we played with 11 and that was for around 30 minutes. In that moment, I think we conceded one goal and I think we didn’t play badly.“We could have done many things better but we kept a good level in that 30 minutes. After that it was a bad game, maybe I made some decisions, like playing Capoue as a center-back to see if able to have more options.“There were different situations, decisions like that. But I am sure it will be different. We know it will be demanding against a good team, but I am sure we compete in the same way as in other games, we have options.”last_img read more
