ROME (AP):It’s judgement weekend in Serie A. League leaders Napoli take a two-point lead over Juventus into a highly anticipated clash of the top-two squads today. Then tomorrow, third-place Fiorentina host fourth-place Inter Milan, who are one point behind the Viola.Napoli and Juventus are on club record winning streaks.Napoli have won eight straight, while Juventus have 14 consecutive victories, and need three more to match the Serie A record of 17 established by Inter in 2006-07.Napoli beat Juventus 2-1 in September with goals from Lorenzo Insigne and Gonzalo Higuain, but that was before the Turin club found its stride and was able to overcome the off season departures of Andrea Pirlo, Arturo Vidal, and Carlos Tevez.Having joined Juventus on a €40 million transfer from Palermo in June, Paulo Dybala has developed into the Turin squad’s most dangerous weapon with 13 goals. And with only 15 goals conceded, Juventus have the best defence in Italy. With 24 goals in as many matches, Napoli forward Gonzalo Higuain is having the season of his life. With 14 matches remaining, Higuain already has more goals than the 22 that Mauro Icardi and Toni led Serie A with last season.”My intention is to continue scoring,” Higuain said. “For me, and most important, to help the squad, which is aiming for something really big.”Napoli’s only two Serie A titles came in 1987 and 1990 when Diego Maradona was carrying the club. Also this weekend, it’s Lazio vs Hellas Verona; Carpi vs Roma; Empoli vs Frosinone; Chievo Verona vs Sassuolo; AC Milan vs Genoa; Palermo vs Torino; Sampdoria vs Atalanta; and Udinese vs Bologna.
WIN DEM WHEELZ, in association with Caymanas Track Limited (CTL), will pay homage to racehorse grooms at Caymanas Park on Saturday, April 23, with the Grooms’ Association Day race meet comprising 11 races. Details for Grooms’ Association Day were outlined by Andrew Azar, managing director of Win Dem Wheelz, as well as Cedric Stewart, chief executive officer of CTL and racing secretary Denzil Miller Jr at yesterday’s launch in the Trainers’ Room at Caymanas Park. To begin with, five veteran grooms will be honoured on the afternoon in recognition of their long and dedicated contribution to racing for 50 years. They are Headley Scott, popularly called ‘Scott Brady’, who groomed the second horse (Cardigan) to win on the opening day of Caymanas Park on August 22, 1959, and was a top groom with the legendary trainer Aston Commock back then; as well as Lenford Walker, Everald White, Fitzroy Tulloch and Roy Hamilton. The card will also feature the running of the Win Dem Wheelz Trophy over a mile for $180,000 claimers, this offering a total purse of $550,000 inclusive of $50,000 from the sponsor; the Grooms’ Association Trophy claiming $250,000 – $210,000, with a purse of $530,000; and, above all, the grade one renewal of the Legal Light Trophy over 1820 metres, with a purse o $1.2 million. According to Azar, grooms are “very special people to our industry and the unsung heroes who dedicate their lives to the daily care of the magnificent thoroughbred. On this special occasion, it is only fitting to mention the names of the five grooms who will be honoured”. Azar further stated that the first five grooms in each of the 11 races on the card would receive valuable product prizes and ultimately, the names of all grooms, who have horses on the programme will be placed in a raffle, and at the end of the meet, a lucky groom would receive a Ramco 250 Tiger motorcycle valued at $300,000, courtesy of Win Dem Wheelz. Azar was hailed by Trainers’ Association president Vin Edwards, United Trainers’ Association president Dale Murphy, and Grooms’ Asso- ciation president Fabian White for his generosity, social conscience, and unwavering support for racing, not only in his capacity as an outgoing deputy chairman of CTL, but through the support of his company. Vin Edwards said over a decade ago, he made representations for grooms to be included in the Hall of Fame, and although this was resisted initially, his persistent efforts paved the way for Vincent Blackwood to be the first groom to be so honoured some years ago. Edwards contends that divestment has never been successful in Jamaica, and he is sceptical that the pending divestment of racing will be beneficial to all stakeholders in racing. And finally, Edwards called for an investigation into the $750 million spent in the construction of the Jamaica Racing Commission /Betting, Gaming and Lotteries Commission building at 78C Hagley Park Road, which has become dysfunctional for the most part. -O.C.
Roberto Firmino and Philippe Coutinho celebrating Liverpool’s third goal Liverpool humbled Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium as Philippe Coutinho and Roberto Firmino ran riot on Saturday evening. The first goal came after only seven minutes through an own goal by Eliaquim Mangala before Coutinho doubled the lead 13 minutes later. The Reds were 3-0 up after 30 minutes as Firmino scored before Sergio Aguero scored a stunner before half time.Martin Skrtel powered in the final goal with 10 minutes remaining on an evening where Liverpool could conceivably have scored eight or nine. The win leaves Liverpool six points adrift of the Champions League places, while Manchester City drop down to third.Liverpool broke the deadlock after only seven minutes when Coutinho robbed Bacary Sagna of the ball on City’s right before Firmino sent in a low cross which was clumsily turned past Joe Hart by Mangala as he tried to sort out his feet.Manchester City’s defensive frailties in the absence of Vincent Kompany were highlighted again for the second goal as Firmino took advantage of Mangala’s indecision to run into the box before delivering a low pass across goal for Coutinho to stroke home.Jurgen Klopp’s high intensity pressing tactic when playing away from home had City like rabbits in a headlight as Coutinho skilfully chipped the ball over the dreadful Mangala and linked with Firmino who volleyed just wide of Hart’s far post. For as bad as Mangala had been, Liverpool’s Brazilian attacking duo of Coutinho and Firmino had been every bit as brilliant as they combined again for Liverpool’s third.Emre Can produced a lovely backheel to set Coutinho free in the box, before the Brazilian squared to his fellow countryman Firmino to knock the ball into an empty net.Liverpool looked like they would score with every attack but Sergio Aguero, so often the hero for City, gave Manuel Pellegrini’s side a lifeline on the stroke of half time as he ran at the Reds defence before curling in a beautiful right-footed shot past Simon Mignolet from 25 yards.Manchester City replaced Yaya Toure and Jesus Navas with Fernandinho and Fabian Delph at the break and were far more competitive with energy levels similar to those exhibited by Liverpool in the first half.In a scrappy second half, it took a moment of genius from Adam Lallana to carve out the first clear-cut chance as the Englishman cleverly dummied Coutinho’s pass but Hart saved well at Firmino’s feet.City’s best chance came through Raheem Sterling who latched on to a poor backpass from James Milner but the former Red took the ball too wide before setting up Aguero who saw his shot stopped by fantastically Mignolet.Liverpool’s fourth goal was a thunderbolt of a volley by Skrtel after confusion from the corner, six years to the day the defender scored his first for the Reds, also against Manchester City. The result was proof of the hard work put in by Klopp and the players on the training ground as their high intensity pressing could easily have led to another four goals being scored by the Reds. 1

There have been rumors of video-calling coming to mobile versions of Skype for the last week or so, and now it’s official: the popular VOIP service has announced an update to its iPhone app that will allow video calls over both 3G and WiFi networks. The new Skype app works on iPhone 4 and 3GS and the iPod Touch with iOS 4.0 or above. You can also receive video calls on 3rd generation iPod Touch devices and on the iPad. Video-calling was already available on Skype desktop clients. The new Skype app expands the number of those who have access to video-calling on their Apple devices, as Apple’s new Facetime only works on iPhone 4 and Mac computers. Why Tech Companies Need Simpler Terms of Servic… Tags:#NYT#voice#web audrey watters As the response to Skype’s recent outage demonstrated, the service has become an important communication tool – for both professional and personal reasons. Skype says there are approximately 25 million concurrent users logged into Skype at any given time. And video-calling makes up more and more of that usage – approximately 40% of all Skype-to-Skype minutes for the first six months of 2010, according to Neil Stevens, Skype’s general manager of consumer business. “By bringing video to mainstream users at their home or work via their desktops, on the go with their mobiles, or into their living room via their TV, Skype has made it possible for millions of people to share their video moments wherever they are.”“Wherever they are” is increasingly mobile, and improvements to Skype’s iPhone app are welcome news. No word, however, on when video-calling will come to Android. Say there are three other bidders; that’s only a one-in-four chance of getting the work. That means the contractor has a 100% opportunity of spending time/money, with on average a 75% chance of NOT getting the job. The more time and effort the contractor puts into realistically pricing the project, the greater the contractor’s investment risk.Homeowner risksWhile we believe that most contractors are ethical, there are certainly opportunities for dubious bidding strategies. Does the contractor lowball the bid to get the contract and plan to make it up in “unexpected” change orders; or go down the quality scale on materials and labor, particularly for building systems not readily visible to the homeowner; or push the construction schedule at the expense of quality control? There are risks for the homeowner also. Architects may not have the latest insight on product or labor price trends, especially for how much it might cost to actually assemble very unique designs. The owners and architect may have fallen in love with the house design, but the construction costs may be prohibitively expensive. Now what? Spend additional time and money for the architect to undo/redo the design to bring it in line with the budget; or worse, abandon the project? This is not a road we wanted to go down.Start with a rough estimateInstead, we asked the two pre-selected contractors to prepare realistic budget estimates within 15% margin of accuracy. We know that the building envelope is still fluid, and we have not yet begun the interior design. So we are looking for a rough estimate on affordability, not micrometer accuracy. More fundamentally, we want the selected contractor to use his/her experience and insight to explicitly participate, shape, and influence all of the final construction details. We hope the selected contractor can offer alternative approaches that reduce cost, expedite, or simplify construction without compromising building performance. We will pay the non-selected GC a fixed, pre-determined fee for his efforts. We expect to get the budget estimates from the two GCs in the next few weeks and then welcome one of them to the team. The first article in this series was Kicking the Tires on a Passivhaus Project. Roger Normand’s construction blog is called EdgewaterHaus. [Editor’s note: Roger and Lynn Normand are building a Passivhaus in Maine. This is the third article in a series that will follow their project from planning through construction.]What’s the best way to pick a residential general contractor (GC)? There are many books written on the subject. I want to focus this blog on one specific aspect: the point in time that the GC becomes a member of the team along with the architect and the homeowner.Going out to bid is problematicWe pre-screened numerous GCs in face-to-face meetings, looked at some of their work, spoke with some of their customers, checked with Better Business Bureau, and considered their experience in building high performance buildings. We narrowed the field to two candidates, both of which had built a home to LEED Platinum standards, and had experience using a blower-door test to check the tightness of the building envelope.Traditionally, we would have our architect, Cris Briley, prepare a complete set of construction drawings (perhaps up to 40 large blueprints) and then send these drawings out for bid by several contractors. We believe there are many problems with this approach for both the GCs and the homeowner.
Holding the cash-rich Indian Premier League (IPL) responsible for Australian cricket’s decline, former Pakistan cricket captain Javed Miandad said the Australians got distracted by the big cash thrown at them by the Twenty20 league.”I believe Australia’s slump has a lot to do with their players’ association with the IPL,” Miandad told The News.”Most of their top players got a bit too distracted because of the big cash thrown at them by the IPL. They even started ignoring national duty which has really caused their downfall,” he added. The Australians, who were almost an invincible lot till about a year back, have completely slumped to disaster, which is evident from their dismal show in the recently-concluded Ashes series.Australia lost the Ashes series at home 1-3 and wilted to fifth place in the Test rankings.Miandad feels the Aussie cricketers got lured by the money-spinning IPL and did not try to resist the temptation to earn the big bucks. “All of that has really hurt the Australians, who I am sure would have not slumped like this if their players had resisted the temptation to earn big bucks that was used to lure them by the IPL,” said Miandad.According to Miandad, players like Glen McGrath, Shane Warne and Adam Gilchrist retired from Test cricket before their time so that they could earn the IPL millions, which was launched in 2008.Miandad also warned that this twenty20 league might just end up killing the Test as well as One-Day cricket altogether.advertisement”It certainly will. There is too much disparity when it comes to pays and if proper steps are not taken then top players will continue to put this league above international cricket,” said Miandad.- With PTI inputs
The semifinal appearance in the women’s doubles event at the just concluded Wimbledon championships catapulted Sania Mirza and Elena Vesnina to number two slot in the WTA Race to year-end Championships.Sania-Elena pair have 4506 points in the list, headed by Kveta Peschke and Katarina Srebotnik, who have 6865 points. The top-four pairs compete in the prestigious year-end championship.”The partnership with Elena has been great in the last four months, specially the Slams. When we started playing together last year at Dubai, and had somebody said that we will be number two after Wimbledon, we would have laughed,” Sania told PTI from Dubai.Sania has taken a three-week break from the circuit to recover from the injury in the left knee.”It’s (knee) sore since I am off the pain killers. I am recovering. Hopefully it will be okay after 10 days rest.” Sania’s first tournament after the break will be the WTA event in Washington from July 25.The good show at the Wimbledon also resulted in Sania achieving the career-best doubles rank of 11, an improvement of three slots. In the singles though Sania slid to 63, a loss of three position, after a first round exit.In the ATP rankings, Somdev Devvarman rose to career-best 63 in the singles.Leander Paes also improved his doubles rankings by getting back into the top-10. He is placed eighth while his partner Mahesh Bhupathi is highest ranked Indian in the list at number five.Rohan Bopanna is at number 10, just behind his Pakistani partner Aisam-ul-haq Qureshi.advertisement- With PTI inputs

And Keane thinks he will continue adding to that tally.”I’m sure he’ll stay at this club for a long time. He loves it here. There’s no question that he cannot get to Jimmy Greaves’ record,” Keane, who banged in over 100 goals for Spurs, told Sky Sports.”What I like about Harry is that… everyone keeps talking about ‘ah, next year is he going to be good?’ He keeps doing it.”I’m sick of people saying ‘is he tired?’ because he keeps banging the goals in and that spurs him on.”When you speak to him he gets annoyed when people keep mentioning it and then he just keeps coming on the pitch and keeps scoring goals.”For me at this moment in time, he’s the best No. 9 in the world.”
